A dry, barren landscape.

Antidepressants Made My Vagina Dry

I have always been an anxious kid growing up and I never really got any help for that. So, it was inevitable that at the young age of 22, my doctor prescribed antidepressants! Yay me! I’m just kidding!

As we know, antidepressants come with crazy side effects, but the one I want to talk about is how it reduced my libido and made my vagina dry! Yes, it did. It took me a while to figure out that this new reality of mine was linked to the drugs I was taking - but what could I do? I needed to stay on my meds to live a normal life, but my sex life was now far from normal. So I did what every young desperate and sexually frustrated woman would do - I purchased my first bottle of lube. “This is it, I found the solution to my problem and now I will live happily ever after” is what I thought……

It was a beautiful Saturday morning, I woke up to the sounds of my lodge mates rushing to meet up with an early 8am lecture on campus. I honestly couldn't be bothered, I hated going to class, so I stayed back and enjoyed the morning in my flat like always. Still sleepy, I stumbled into my bathroom to pee, and when I pulled down my panties and sat on the toilet, I smelled something awful. I quickly realized that the smell was coming from me, from my vagina! Cold chills ran down my spine because I thought I was dying. Ladies, I got my first BV.

The conversation with the pharmacist was the most embarrassing encounter I had ever had in my life, but bless her heart, she gave me some boric acid suppositories and I was back to normal within a week.

I didn’t understand what had happened, but after some research, I realized that the lube I was using, very frequently, threw off my vagina’s PH and caused me to have bacterial vaginosis (BV). “There has to be another way, I can’t live life with a dry pussy” I thought. And I wish I could tell you I stopped using lube, I didn’t, I couldn’t, it was the only way. So I made peace with the fact that I was destined to use lube my entire life, while having 3 years worth of Boric Acid in my pantry.

A decade passed, during which I attempted to wean off my antidepressants several times, but each attempt failed, so I was still stuck with them, and I was still stuck with my problem. I began to look towards healthier dietary choices and cultivated an interest in herbs, particularly African ones. It took two years of dedicated research and numerous trials before I eventually crafted a natural remedy, for my predicament; a tea blend using, Goron Tula, aka African Miracle Fruit (it truly was a miracle). And I when I tell you that my vagina is now wetter than water.... ok, maybe that's a little too dramatic, but you get my point. I mean, Cardi B couldn't have released WAP at a better time than this! Needless to say, my sex life has improved and I honestly feel like I am in my 20s again.......
